Ceramic Sculpture Invoking Spirit and Nature Sandra Grace Storey was born and grew up in the Yukon Territory, where the natural environment, especially the animals and their mythology, always fascinated her. In 1985, during her foundation year at Emily Carr College of Art & Design, she discovered her voice and passion were connected to sculpture and even more intensely to the medium of clay. She graduated with a degree of distinction for an outstanding body of work in the department of sculpture. Sandra makes clay objects that resemble animals or the human figure to evoke a single moment within the ongoing narrative of human existence. She believes the earliest evidence of primitive art is a reflection of the human need to understand and belong to the intricate matrix of life, and that the earliest stories are myths that help explain our place in the universe. Like the best of these stories, her art blurs the boundaries of ego and culture in order to recognize and celebrate simple feelings, memories and human nature. Her work is in collections in Canada, New Zealand, the U.K. and Korea. She is currently represented by the Arts Underground and Copper Moon Galleries in Whitehorse, Yukon, and Just Imajan Art Gallery in Cochrane, Alberta. |
